I think it's ridiculous

Wednesday, April 6, 2011
In my Sociology class today, we watched part of a video of a lecture/presentation given by Jean Kilbourne.  The presentation was called "Killing Me Softly part 4," and its focus was women in advertising.  I had never really noticed everything about how women are portrayed.....alllll the time, in almost all advertising.  The video was amazing. I loved it. Jean was pretty funny too, so that made it better.   I have always known that in advertising and everything that women are more portrayed as objects, have unrealistic bodies, are shown either as a sexual subject or have some sort of stereotype linked to them shown as being true.    I didn't get to watch the entire thing because class ended. But I would have loved to!
I decided to show some examples.

This just suggests that women should feel obligated to have bigger boobs to please their husband.
 It's the woman's "fault"
Jean spoke with advertising companies and they even said that many times, when putting together a picture of a model and airbrushing it, they will use more than one woman's features to make her look "flawless" and "perfect." I wish I had a picture of an example of what they showed in the film, but they literally took different aspects of different models to make one woman.  And check out this picture!  She is super skinny as it is and they made her even more so.  Like she wasn't skinny enough for their photo shoot..

This one just speaks for itself.

The woman in these photos ended up passing away due to her unhealthy weight of 80lbs.  She was still modeling the time she died.  I don't understand why women want to look so skinny, like she.  I mean, seriously? You can see her ribs really well.  The most disturbing part I think is the fact that the modeling agencies were just fine with her size, wanted her that size, and kept her modeling.
People just need to realize that your aim shouldn't be to look like some models (because they don't even look, in real life, like they do in the photos. They are photo shopped like crazy) and their aim should be to be healthy. Not someone who doesn't eat, avoids things they think taste good because it will make them "fat," and want to look like this woman up there.
Also, some women really are super skinny because that is how their genetics are.  If you are not build to be a size 0 then you will never be. 0 is farrr too thin anyway. If you work toward that goal, you'll have to go anorexic. Which is obviously ridiculous!

But I just really wanted to post some of this.  There were SOO many more better examples and eye-opening advertisements on the film, but I couldn't find them.
I'm not a conservative person. I understand that times are different, but I still don't find it good in the least that the main role women have in advertising is using them as objects and are demeaning.
